Assignment

Day 4

Daily Quote:

You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you. ~Ray Bradbury

Romance readers often point to the fantasy aspect of romance, declaring it keeps them sane and optimistic. Do you think it’s the same for writers? The romance community is a small world and there are lots of great folks in it. Lots of friends to be had. Sometimes reality seems cruel and cold. What do you think of the Ray Bradbury quote? Do you stay drunk on your writing? Is it a job or a hobby? How do you tell the difference?

How’s the challenge going? Leave a comment below.

  1. Writing definitely keeps me sane :)

In a recent library talk I did, one of the guys said I sounded like a very busy lady and when did I get any ‘me time’? (His insightful question blew me away at the time!)

I answered that I didn’t, that my ‘me’ time would come later. Then another insightful lady piped up and said my writing is probably my ‘me’ time and you know what? She’s right!

I’d never quite looked at it like that before but when I finally get to sit down at 8.30pm when the kiddies are in bed, and hubby too usually ;) it’s blissful. It’s just me and my characters and an exciting, unknown journey we’re about to take together.

Yes, writing is my job and I treat it as such but it’s wonderful to have such a fun, fabulous thing to do with my time :)

  3. Romance has its optimistic aspects but there is also a lot of angst, misunderstanding, horrible childhoods, crazy villains and other not so nice stuff….

  4. :write I am at 3,722 wods and have to keep :pound to keep that little editor voice in my head away. It wants to tell me this is junk, that I can’t do anything right. All my childhood nags. I figure if I can do this I might finish my other two wip. I will finsih it then submit it to the group I critique with to see what it needs. :ninja :wall :write

  10. Kathy,
great going with the word count! Ignore that editor inside your head and keep writing.
It’s a first draft, you can always go back later and polish :)

Just went back and saw your question, how to make this “things were headed toward the negative side of the invisible number line” less passive.

How about “the negative side of the invisible number line loomed”? Makes the phrase active :)

  14. Well, I will cheer all of you up in regards to word count…sigh…I am at ZERO. Yep; I have a full time job as co-manager of a Books-A-Million, and I have been doing a side job at home, doing interent research for a friend of mine. This has not left me with much “me time”. And for me, that would be the time to write.
To complicate things, I summarized my two favorite story ideas to afriend whose opinion I value; I was leaning towards one idea slightly more than the other one, although i want to write both. She liked the other idea…now I am not sure which way to jump. Argh! Both need a little research to give a more authentic feel to the envirnoment & the characters. However, i do not have time to do the research for both story ideas & write up oen complete story thisd month.
This leads to my question to the group, and to our advisers for this challenge: how do you decide in a situation like this? My friend thinks the one idea would be more difficult for a general audience to access, because it would require either a decent working knowledge of a few different mythologies/pantheons (or i get to educate while entertaining, which I don’t necessarily object to); and she feel smy other odea, that she likes more, would give me a greater opportunity to examine some interesting underlying questions about motivation, selfishness & the choice to become more than you ever thought you could be. I agree with her in regards to the latter opinion, but I am not so sure that readers would have to walk into my first story idea with an education in Humanities 101, first.
    Help!
(BTW…I apologize for any typos I may have missed; it’s almost midnight & I’ve been up & running for way too many hours already, today, and I closed the bookstore, tonight.)

  15. Emily, any words are worthy of a yay! Sometimes they’re just so hard to come by that you need to cheer each and every one :)

    Justine,
    go with your gut instinct.
Write the story that is really screaming out to you.
It’s great to have other people’s opinions but in this case, go with the one that wants to leap from the tips of your fingers to the keyboard :write

  16. I made over 1000 words today, but broke one of my big rules about “no editing.” Mine is a sequel in a series, and I realized it didn’t have the same steamy feel, so I went back and fleshed out the opening. I did that now as I realized how the characters interact then would greatly affect how I write the story later. So I did it, and no regrets!
By the way, is anyone else posting excerpts? I’m posting each day’s favorite line on my blog on http://www.myspace.com/authorlisalogan.

  17. :hug This is a group :hug for all the ones out there. I have been only writing hit and miss today. My nephew’s wife is my niece as far as I am concerned. My niece is in Germany she is taking online college classes. I am helping her as her lifeline. She vents to me shares with me. She is in Germany all alone, her husband is deployed to Iraq. She is 12 weeks and three days pregnant. So today I wrote a bit worked on College Algebra and College English :write :cowboy :wave
My word count so far 5,071 :party I have to work the early shift tomorrow and I really should be in the bed already. :pound But I’m chatting on the phone with the girl in Germany now. She was asleep and her Dad called and told her she is an aunt. Her sister had her baby. :partyhat So :write on everyone and :hug

  18. I’m adding my word counts on my little meter things on the side of my blog. Sick yesterday and Monday but wrote yesterday anyway. 3000 words on one and around a 1000 on the other.
As far as staying drunk on my writing…sure. Doesn’t everybody?
    lmao
