The Call

Getting published for me was like getting pregnant after a one-night stand – Kimberly Killion

Hello! My name is Kimberly Killion and I had a baby (my debut book).

It all started last July when I signed up to attend this big hoopla (RWA National in Dallas). I had high hopes of meeting Mr. Right (an editor). I even scheduled a time to speak with him. Let’s call him ‘Peter’.

Prior to this soirée, I lost a few pounds, got a manicure and a pedicure, and shopped for the perfect outfit. I rehearsed the words (my pitch) I would say to him upon our introduction.

Then…we met. ‘Peter’ was everything I had hoped for. At first, he wasn’t overly impressed with what I had to say, then I sparked his interest and he asked to see me again (submit my writing). It was all so magical…

‘Peter’ said he would call. Of course, I tried not to get my hopes up. I had been rejected by so many others before him. I returned to my uneventful life and waited by the phone with bated breath (cliché) for ‘Peter’ to call. We’d hit it off, right? I mean, I was floating on air. I emailed every friend I had to tell them all about Mr. Perfect and what had transpired between us. I was giddy, delirious, slap-happy. That’s what it feels like after a one-night stand, right?

Ten days later…‘Peter’ called. ((((OMG!!!!!!))))

He made me an offer I couldn’t refuse (a two-book contract). I told him I just found out I was pregnant, but he wanted me to deliver the baby in three months. I tried to explain to ‘Peter’ that these things take closer to nine. He didn’t budge. I asked for six months, but ‘Peter’ wasn’t playing nice, and dammit, I wanted more ‘Peter’! I conceded to his demands and had three months to give birth to a baby (write 80,000 words to complete my manuscript).

This ‘Call’ story, like many others, will end with a HEA. The baby developed at an alarming rate (10,000 words per week). Three months after I’d met ‘Peter’ I gave birth. She weighed 6.1 ounces, measured 6.9 x 4.3 x 0.9 inches. She was nearly perfect and ‘Peter’ picked out her name; HER ONE DESIRE. Excited was hardly the word to describe the relief I felt after the delivery.

An agonizing year later, HER ONE DESIRE has been preened, promo-ed, pampered to perfection and is ready to strut herself. I do hope she doesn’t disappoint. Recently, ‘Peter’ and I have been talking about our second child. This one is a boy and ‘Peter’ let me name him. I decided long ago, his name would be HIGHLAND DRAGON, and we are expecting his arrival in October 2009.

Any good mother would have a picture of her first born. (Pulls out wallet and flips passed the ‘real’ children) Here is a picture of HER ONE DESIRE right after delivery. Isn’t she beautiful?!?
